Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537 ~ 1598) may have been born into poverty and not having any samurai lineage, but that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the most prolific, unifying Japanese warlords of his time. Toyotomi rose quickly through the ranks of the Oda clan from a page to a foot soldier and then to samurai thanks to his cheerful nature, tactful manner, and intelligence. After successfully commanding the Oda clan’s army to crush the Mori clan and avenge the loss of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi was named as the clan’s new daimyo. The years leading up to Toyotomi’s death were marked with notable social and political reforms that the Tokugawa Shogunate later adopted during their 250-year rule of unified Japan.
